Stucco needs compatible coatings
Standard exterior paint can trap moisture or fail early if the wall is not prepared correctly. We focus on cleaning, patching, priming, and coating choices suited to stucco and EIFS.
- Surface washing and prep
- Crack patching before coating
- Colour refreshes
- Acrylic and elastomeric coating options
Recoat before the finish fails completely
Fading, staining, hairline cracking and uneven colour can indicate that a wall needs assessment. A compatible recoat may suit a sound wall; loose material or ongoing moisture concerns need repair before the finish is refreshed.
Curb appeal without full replacement
Stucco painting can modernize a home, unify old repairs, and create a more consistent exterior finish when the existing wall system is still in good condition.
Preparation before a fresh finish
Loose coatings, failed patches, cracks, and moisture-related problems need attention before colour goes on. Preparation may include appropriate cleaning, removing unsound material, repairs, and a primer specified for the selected coating. The existing stucco or EIFS system determines which products and preparation steps are suitable.
Factors that determine painting and recoating scope
The work depends on wall area, height and access, current coating condition, repairs required and the coating system selected. Colour changes and architectural trim also affect the scope. Preparation and repair requirements need to be clear alongside the proposed finish.

Plan the work around curing conditions
The wall needs suitable temperature, moisture, and weather conditions during application and curing. We discuss scheduling after reviewing the property and the selected product requirements. If the wall has deeper damage, the repair scope comes before the colour refresh.

FAQ
Stucco Painting questions
Can stucco and EIFS both be painted or recoated?
Many sound stucco and EIFS surfaces can be recoated with compatible products, but the existing finish and previous coatings need assessment. Adhesion, moisture behaviour and preparation requirements matter. We review cracks, loose material and recurring damp areas before discussing colour. A fresh coating cannot rebuild damaged insulation or correct a deteriorated substrate.
How is stucco recoating different from a new installation?
Recoating renews the surface of an existing sound exterior. A new installation establishes the wall assembly and can involve removal, preparation, insulation, reinforcement and detailed interfaces. If the underlying wall has failed, applying another coating may not be an appropriate repair. The decision should follow a condition assessment rather than the desired colour alone.
Should cracks and damaged patches be repaired before painting?
Yes. Loose material, failed patches and the cause of cracking need assessment before the coating is applied. Surface preparation and compatible repairs help establish a suitable base. Active movement or water entering behind the wall cannot be solved by paint. We discuss whether the repair stays local or needs broader work before the appearance refresh proceeds.
What preparation does a stucco repaint need?
Preparation may include suitable cleaning, removal of loose or incompatible coatings, repairs and a specified primer. Dirt, chalking and biological growth can affect adhesion. The wall must meet the selected product's drying, moisture and surface requirements. Existing stucco, EIFS and previously painted walls can need different preparation, so the same method should not be assumed for every property.
Can stucco be pressure washed before painting?
Cleaning must suit the existing surface and product requirements. Aggressive pressure can erode texture or drive water into vulnerable joints and openings, especially on damaged finishes. A controlled method and suitable drying time are important. Recurring stains should be photographed and assessed for their source before cleaning so an underlying moisture issue is not overlooked.
Is elastomeric paint suitable for every stucco exterior?
No single coating is suitable for every stucco or EIFS wall. Compatibility depends on the existing system, old paint, substrate condition and product specification. A thick flexible coating is not a substitute for repairing movement, loose material or water entry. The proposed cleaner, primer and coating should be discussed as a compatible system rather than chosen from a generic label.

Can recoating make old repair patches less visible?
A compatible recoat across a natural wall section can help unify colour after repairs. Differences in texture or surface flatness may remain visible, particularly in low-angle light. Review the repair finish and proposed coating boundaries first. Extending work to a corner, reveal or full elevation may create a more consistent appearance than painting only the patch.
Can I change my stucco to a darker colour?
Review the colour with the selected system's restrictions and the existing wall condition. Dark colours can increase surface temperatures, which matters for some assemblies and coatings. A sample outdoors helps show the finish beside the roof, windows and masonry. A screen swatch is not enough to confirm the final appearance or suitability of a strong colour change.
How long does stucco painting or recoating take?
Timing depends on the area, cleaning and drying, repair work, access, coats and product-specific curing conditions. Weather and wall temperature affect application. A faded sound elevation and a property needing extensive repairs have different sequences. We review preparation and coating requirements before discussing practical scheduling for the building.
What factors determine a painting or recoating scope?
We review wall area, height and access, existing coatings, cleaning needs, repairs, product compatibility, colour changes and trim details. Protection of windows, entrances and landscaping also forms part of the work plan. The proposed scope should state which elevations are included and distinguish underlying repairs from the surface colour refresh.
How should a newly recoated exterior be maintained?
Follow the coating manufacturer's care requirements and monitor for damage, changing cracks, open joints and recurring staining. Keep drainage details unobstructed and use cleaning methods suited to the finish. If a symptom returns, investigate its cause before applying more coating. Keeping records of the products and preparation helps later maintenance or repair use compatible materials.
